Researching Geoeconomics & Technological Competition

I am a political scientist researching geoeconomics, technological competition, and the political shifts that accompany them. At a time of intensifying global rivalry and technological disruption, my research sheds light on the fundamental transformations of the international system and the global economy. It is located at the intersection of International Political Economy, International Relations and European integration.

At Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, I currently serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for the EUInfra - Infrastructures of Globalization project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project analyzes the European Union’s geoeconomic strategies to secure control over critical infrastructures and technologies. I have previously been Project Coordinator for the Infrastructures and Global Ordering (IGLO) project, funded by the German Universities of Excellence funding line. I am also a Research Associate with the Second Cold War Observatory, a global collective of scholars dedicated to analyzing contemporary great power rivalry.

As an overarching theme, my work offers a material perspective on global competition. It views US-Chinese rivalry and the responses of powers like the European Union as attempts to establish technological leadership and realign infrastructure networks with their preferences. For this, I have conducted extensive research on technologies such as satellite constellations, subsea internet cables, AI-driven defense systems, and electricity grids.

As a distinctive feature of my research is on how intensifying global competition empowers transnational technology corporations to pursue autonomous political agendas. It highlights that these firms have emerged as geoeconomic actors in their own right, capable of reinforcing, undermining, or even challenging state power.

A regional focus of my work is on the European Union, its global position and foreign policy, crisis and integration dynamics, and dependencies on critical networks and technologies.

My work has been published in renowned scientific outlets such as European Journal of International Relations,Journal of European Public Policy, Journal of Common Market Studies, Global Policy, Globalizations, and Competition & Change, among others. I am the author of the book The Politics of the Eurogroup, which provides an intriguing look inside the euro crisis and the secretive forum of finance ministers that came to dominate it. I am currently co-editing a Special Issue on The Global Politics of Big Tech for Politics and Governance, together with Silvia Weko and Steven Rolf. I am also co-editing a Special Issue on Transnational Infrastructures and Geoeconomic Competition for Globalizations, together with Hans-Jürgen Bieling and Jan Ruck.

My research has been featured in various media such as The Conversation, Le Monde, Al Jazeera English, and New Books Network, as well as appearances as guest speaker for international research institutions, science communication platforms, and political education.
